Not Just A Headache

The first time you get a headache, you will probably be left wondering just what exactly it is. This is not uncommon, and it is often the case that people research themselves why their heads appear to be hurting. As we grow older, headaches become more regular - due to a number of factors including the stresses of life, finances, the environment, and our careers. Often, we simply treat the pain of the headache when it strikes, and think nothing of it.

Unfortunately, in more than 10% of cases world wide, a headache is actually a sign of something else. That is actually a rather high number, and is definitely something which people should pay attention to. This basically means that 1 out of 10 people experiencing a headache will have it not because of the usual, common issues - but possibly because of something more complex.

Many reports have been compiled to show exactly what types of things will cause headaches as secondary effects - and we have even put an article up on this website explaining the main things to look out for. However, what you may still be wondering after reading this is - how do you find out whether your headache is more than just a common problem?

Indeed, this is a realistic question - and unfortunately, the answer is not as straightforward as giving a few criteria to look out for.

Doctor Knows Best

We always hear that "if symptoms persist, see you doctor". How many of us actually do go to the doctor to discuss what is going on though? Our guess is that the percentage of people following such advice is quite slim.

When it comes to headaches, however, it is very important to get to the root of the cause. This is especially the case if you have severe headaches on a regular basis. Talking to a doctor could sort everything out - however in some cases, further diagnostic tests may be required before a definite answer can be given.

Sometimes, this will even go as far as requiring a CT scan. Of course, this will not be the case for people who have the odd headache - but it certainly will apply to those who have regular, severe headaches.
